Program Description:

Concordia PA students have a unique opportunity to learn medical practice and health education in South Africa. This program is a partnership between the University of Pretoria and a local LCMS mission school and clinic. Students will provide medical care under the supervision of a local physician at the district hospital, with an emphasis on infectious disease, especially HIV/AIDS. There will also be opportunities to work with a local NP to work with local school children. Students will stay in a local guest house and have some time for side-travel and cultural exploration. Academics

The South Africa PA Rotation program meets the requirement for one (1) elective rotation. Students will provide hands-on medical care under the supervision of a local doctor, similar to other US-located rotations. There will be academic work to be completed prior to going on the rotation, including two, three-hour predeparture sessions and readings geared toward medical preparation for the sort of pathologies expected in South Africa, South African culture and safety instruction.

Details

Medical Experience:
PA students will work alongside medical students and clinical associate students from the University of Pretoria, under the supervision of a local physician at the Middelburg District hospital for three weeks. The patient population who visits the teaching hospital are generally among the poorer citizens of the region. The medical emphasis will likely be on HIV, TB, and child and family health. 

There will also be opportunity for students to work with a local LCMS missionary NP, addressing the healthcare needs of local school children. Other activities will be coordinated by the NP preceptor and may include a visit to the traditional healer and also public health outreach. 

Lodging and Accommodations:

Students will have their lodging and local transportation arranged by the local LCMS missionary hosts. Students will stay at a secure local guest house in Middelburg, similar to a bed and breakfast where typically two meals a day are provided. 
 

Leaders

Pre-departure:
This program is administered by Professor Michael Toppe of Concordia's PA program. He will provide instruction and reading material associated with the pre-rotation work, and assist with logistics. 

On-site medical supervision: 
Dr. Nkombua is a senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria in the Family Physician Faculty. He is heavily involved in clinical education as the Head of Mpumalanga Academic Service Learning Campus. He is familiar with Western medical standards, and practiced for many years in Canada. He will provide medical supervision to students on-site in Middelburg. 

Local Hosts:
LCMS missionary, David Hanay, will serve as host to our students. He will make arrangements for lodging, local transportation, and assist students as necessary. David is the business manager of the local LCMS school.  David's wife is also very helpful helping the students with transportation and other needs.

Requirements

  • This program is for Concordia PA students who are in the rotation stage of their program. 
  • Must be in good academic and conduct standing with the institution.
  • Must comply with all deadlines for applications, document submissions, deposits and other payments.

Costs

All expenses associated with the program will be paid independently by students. Below are expected costs for personal budgeting purposes:
  • Round-trip airfare: ~$1,500  (airfare may be found cheaper)
  • Lodging: ~$810
  • Local transportation:~ $510
  • Meals: ~$300
  • Study Abroad Fee: $50
  • iNext Medical/Travel Insurance: $100
  • COFA fee (10% of trip less airfair) @$180
  • Passport: $110
