The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. All eligible students are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, you must be Pell Grant recipient and be planning to study abroad for at least 28 days in a particular country. Programs in countries that carry a Travel Advisory Level 3 or 4 from the U.S. State Department are not eligible.
One in three students who apply are awarded the scholarship, and the average award amount is $4,000! It is definitely worth applying.
Applications for Spring and Summer programs are due on the first Tuesday of October.
Applications for Fall and Academic-Year programs are due the first Tuesday of March.
This scholarship is for students who are going abroad to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation. Boren has scholarships available for students on summer, semester, and academic-year programs. Awards range between $8,000 to $20,000.
The Fulbright program, the largest U.S. international exchange program, offers opportunities for students in graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. Students must have a B.A. or equivalent before the start of the grant and should have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country.
